Hello All,

I have had my 2012 tomcat for a year now and have been mucking with the ballast and weighting..

I have been unimpressed with the washy and small wake I am pushing...

I used to ride a 2008 B52V23...that boat had a way better surf! I enclosed a pic of me surfing my last wave...

So far I am using full port stock ballast,  A 800 lb bag in the rear port locker. 300 lb bag of front and 1/4 starboard stock ballast..

Just looks washy and blah.....

also I noticed that my exhaust starts steaming a bit...like less water is going through....Any body else have these issues?

I also have a 2012 F21 and have seen the steam in the past (single exhaust with 343 PCM). I do think that is normal at the slower speeds. Last winter my wife saw the steam coming back into the boat and I now have a FAE, so that will no longer be an issue. As far as the ballast/wake, I have the following and the wake looks pretty darn good.

Surf Side Stock Ballast Full

1100lb Bag on Surf Side in Rear Locker

400lb Bag in Front Walkway

Sometimes I will click the Wake Plate Down just slightly depending on what I am seeing on the wake (usually dependent on where people and gear is located). I also plan on adding weight to the non-Surf Side ballast as some are having better results with that.

If you want to get crazy with your wake and make it perfect, there are people working on DIY Wake Gates here on the forum. If I don't sell my boat before next year (to get a 2014), a Wake Gate will be on my winter projects list.

What speed are you surfing at? Last year, I was at 10.8mph, but I think I will be picking it up slightly to 11-11.5mph. Others are going faster, I need some more time to play with my ballast.

We have the same set up as skyski, WE DO NOT HAVE THE WAKE PLATE, this causes the wake to be washy, time to save the $$ for the wake plate.

SkySki:

I vary my speed between 10 and 11. It really depends on conditions...

I will try your setup, i will put more weight in.

As for the Wake gate...Do you mean the malibu style one? That looks pretty good....

I do not have the wakeplate either Rich74,  From what my dealer was telling me...it doesn't do all that much. But opinions differ here and there... I guess you could strap a board to your back deck and clamp it onto keep the wave in check ha ha...

Are you doing something off the side of the hull or behind the hull?

Ok all,

Just decided to post a couple pics from this weekend.

our speed was 10.5-10.7.

Weighting was full ballast on port, 1/3 in starboard.

Added Ballast Bags are 750 in the rear port locker, 350 under the rear port seats

Added Person Weight was 6 people (900 lbs approx)

Added Ballasts 250 Up front (2 pretty ladies)

Maybe I over did it..... but just thought id get some feedback

I have no trim tab...so it was a bit mushy.... but still very strong and fast.

I think that wave looks pretty dam good...

My only comment or suggestion would be to maybe try adding a bit more weight in the front.. maybe just try moving a couple more people up there to start.. keep those pretty ladies company B)

haha, thanks Midnight V10.

I appreciate the compliment. I will try to figure out some stuff for cleaning it up a bit..... I have to find that post of that user who made a trim tab for $250-300.... AND make myself a Fresh Air Exhaust.

Well, Shawndoggy and I are working on DIY Wake plates that (If everything works out as planned) will be able to auto retract when boat is shut off (or even when shifted into neutral) as well as the ability to auto-retract at a pre-determined RPM.. right now cost is around $400...
Parts are in the mail.. im sure one of us will report back within a couple weeks.. I'm thinking Doggy will be done first.

I am also working on a DIY surfgate style set up again with auto retract upon neutral.. Parts are in the mail for that as well. Trying to get it done for under $600.. Hope to report back on this project in a couple weeks.. SUPER STOKED ABOUT THIS!!! if this works out good I may forgo installing the 2800 pounds of automated ballast sitting in my garage B)

Man - I have gone back and forth with MB and my local dealer on procuring a wake plate to clean up my wake. My dealer wants $1,400 for just the part, and after researching on Lenco, it should be around $400. I did find the size and the plate should be 12 x 16! What size of plate did you custom fabricate?

I think they did 12 x 18, the dealer part will integrate into the dash whereas the Lenco plate will not...Not a huge deal but Ithink 1000 is a great savings lol

I have 2013 F21 and have experienced the steaming exhaust but I kick the center trim tab down a bit and it cleans it up. I'm goofy so I run full starboard stock ballast, half port ballast. 1100 in the trunk and 400 on the starboard bow seat. Currently working on wake gates after seeing some demonstrated a few weeks ago on another 2013 F21. Will keep folks updated.

I did a 12 X 18 and it hangs just a touch over the edges. 12X16 is what I would do if to start over. A touch means 1/8" or 1/16" just the tip of the hinge pin. I would bolt a custom plate onto the side of it like a Centurion.

I am trying the asymmetrical plate this year. So far it seems to be somewhat effective in cleaning up the goofy side on my boat.
