Stock 2014 F22 - surf help

Hi Everyone,

 

Brand new just bought a holdover 2014 F22 tomcat. Got my 10 hours on it and started playing with surfing this weekend. I DO NOT have the surf system just the cav plate. Would love some advice on getting a better wake with some push.

 

I am looking for at least the rest of this season to stay stock if possible.. I live in Montana and don't have months to go.

 

I tried starting with both stock tanks full and couldn't get a clean wake at all, no matter what did with the cav plate.

 

Switched to just the left tank full and cav plate about 50% down and cleaned up nice and could surf. Seemed very close to boat though and not tons of push. I myself and new to surfing so that I am learning also.

 

Topics seen so far are mostly about adding bags. I would like to try to stay as close to stock as possible, nice have the storage and not ready spend more :-). Already big investment with boat, boards, etc.

 

Was reading about bleeding the opposite side stock tank off? Could this help if I fill both tanks and then get going bleed some off would this help clean up the left side wake?

 

If anyone has some advice on getting best I can out of this boat as is would be super helpful. Thanks!

There are a lot of guys on here with this boat and can get you going. You are listing the boat so only fill the side you are surfing on. None on the other side. Use people or weights if you don't want to buys bags. To get it longer add weights/people to the front. Have fun.

I have the same boat and was new to all of the surfing, as well. I don't have a surf system either. Honestly, I wasn't really happy until I put at least a 750 bag in the rear locker of the surf side. You can surf stock but like you said. You are close to the boat and it doesn't have a lot of push. I know it isn't what you want.

 

I am getting away with doing it fairly cheap right now. I just throw a pump over the side and fill the bag in the locker. The bag is about $200 and a pump is about $100. It is going to be worth it. 

 

You already invested this much in the boat and equipment. If you can get something for now, for another 300, it might be worth it. 

My current set up is surf side full on the internal. I have an 1100 in the surf side real locker and an integrated sac in the front. The internal non-surf side is usually about half to a quarter full depending on people. The cav plate down 25%. I get the best results. That set up really only cost me about $600. 

 

Again. I am not an expert. I have never surfed behind anything but my boat and I learned by trial and error.

We ran stock last year.  You can surf without added weight, but you will want to add some weight.

 

Like was mentioned, you need weight on the side you plan to surf on first.

 

Fill the surf side internal tank full and we mostly ran the other side empty.

 

We ran a 400lb in the rear locker and a 400lb in the compartment just in front of the rear locker.  I also added about 100lb of weight in the nose by putting my anchors up front.

 

We tried stacking the two 400lb sacs, but the wake seemed better by putting them the way we did. 

 

We ran 1/4 down on the tab, and speed was around 11.6 or so.

Thanks guys for the good input. I will see what I can put together looks like to truly build a perfect wake will need to eventually add some ballast. 

Nice to see the speed your running and where the bags have been put. I will of course need adjust for fact that I don't have bags yet. Do you have a  bag that you prefer? 

 

Until I get a bag do you think I might benefit from running 1/2 to 1/4 full non surf side internal? Will look at trying it, especially if end up with a few more people to help keep the list of boat.

It seems some folks like to add some non-surf side weight, but it didn't seem to help us and actually seemed to make it worse.

 

But.. you can fill it and then bleed off until the wave looks better.

 

Our first summer we just used fat sacs with a pump you throw over the side. 

 

The more folks you add sitting down the surf side definitely helps as well.

Ive been on a lot of boats using both a surf system or just weight and have decide that malibu hit a home run with surf gate.  We sell MB and in the last 10 years I've been at the shop we've sold MC, Nautique, and Centurion.  Good friends of mine own a few 2015 T22's, T23, G25, G23, SV233 and I have to say that the surf gate has been the best.  And I do like having the option to use the wedge if you prefer a more vertical wave.  I personally have been riding with wedge down but going a little faster to draw some length out of it.  

 

The DIY guys that are building gates whether using an actuator or clip on like the wickedwakesurf/missionboatgear are on it.  

 

I have quite a few friends who have older boats and they are building the clip on ones with tons of success.  

 

The most experience i have on an MB (I'm not the salesman) has been on a customers 21 B52 and we have all stock full, an 1100 on starboard side, and 1500 enzo back on the port pretty much all full using the center trim to adjust and clean the wake.  Speed is usually around 10.8  if we can use the center trim to clean up the wake with full ballast then we start to empty and wean off the non surf side until it looks right.  Hope that helps!

Sounds like I need either invest in a little bit of ballast.  Should you only get the size bag you want to fill completely? Say if wanted add 800 in back locker get an 800 lb bag vs a 1100 and not fill all the way up?

 

I like idea of just putting in locker and not having to lose the storage in rest of boat. Also considering getting a surf tab like the mission boat gear. Just not sure about cutting holes in the boat and me trying assemble something that works, if had a sure fire design with templates etc. then maybe. Can get the MB surf tab system put on for few grand... that's a lot spend when can get bags get close.

Hey Everyone,

 

So I have not invested in any ballast as of yet. I did build a surf tab that I attached to swim platform that rests against the transom on the drivers side of boat. (Starboard correct?).

I then filled both stock ballast tanks 1800# and it had a very clean wave and was able to surf for the first time this summer without the rope for extended periods of time.

 

I got maybe 40 bucks total into my tab. Looks a little cheap made out of wood attached to a expensive boat. :D. This tab took me a couple minutes to attach it once in water. Minute remove. Held on with a turnbuckle. Done deal.

 

Question is I have seen a lot of back and forth on weather the GOSURFASSIST is worth the investment. I like the idea of a clean looking boat, not having fiddle with things.

Read on here not everyone is liking them or having difficulties.

 

Also what is the big difference between the F22 Tomcat (my boat is 2014, just bought it this summer) and the B52 23'. I ask cause have seen a B52 (2015) all set up for surfing for sale and more boat surfing seem be the B52.

Thoughts on switching out of a boat so fast? And going from the tomcat to B52?

More weight!  the wave will turn into a monster with another 2000-3000#'s.  enzo sack and 1100 in corners.  I've been on one boat with surf assist and stock factory 1800#'s of ballast and saw a similar wave to what you have shown in the picture…. worth the 4-5k to install… questionable.  just buy some gates from www.missionboatgear.com for $500 and call it good.

Mgigs7 your boat is the boat I was looking at and making me consider trading off my Tomcat that I just bought new in July.

 

Waterskiproshop my tab I built is similar to the mission boat gear tab, not as refined. They are still 4-6 weeks out for a universal tab. One of the other ones is looking at making me a custom one that I tailor once received...still out 4-6 weeks. Yes a much smaller investment. Put the money towards tower speakers and ballast :-). 

What is the enzo sack you mention?

(As you can tell I am new to the world of this type of boating, grew up in Alaska running aluminum jet boats on the rivers)

 

Or thought was is the change easier look at different boat? :rolleyes:
