Slapped Silly - Phase 1

Ok, so I have spent the last two years obsessing about if my 16 F22 should be slapped, or stick to the GSA. The biggest anxiety I have is not knowing!!!! Well I finally decided to quit wondering and get my butt in gear and figure it out. So the objective here was simple, find out if I can get a better wave with slappers! But I wasn’t willling to drill my transom just to try it (this has been my biggest road block). So the goal was to design a way to try it, but not compromise the integrity of the slapped wave by having a rinky dink design. So I built a base plate that will mount to the transom via the existing GSA and actuator holes, it serves as a mounting plate for the slapper. If the test works, I will mount permanent to the transom and have the GSA holes filled and painted. The other issue was integrating it into the factory GSA deploy system that’s already controlled by ZeroOff, I’m slightly OCD and didn’t want to add a new controller with that one there already. The biggest problem here was the stroke length of the actuator. GSA uses the shorter stroke, and every aftermarket slapper I see is using the longer 4” stroke. In order to accomplish this I used the same mounting style that the GSA system uses, a lower pivot point. This also allows me to mimick the multiple pin design that they use so that I can easily try differnent degrees off the hull to dial in the wave. Currently I’m only building the Starboard side tab since I surf regular. But I will do both sides permanent if it works. I will also build much more astechically pleasing gates that don’t look homemade haha. I have done one test fit and I have 3 pin locations that vary between 17 and 30 degrees deflection from Hull. New holes can easily be added for more angles if necessary. I’m almost done and should finish tomorrow, all that needs to be done now is bolt it to the transom. I’m through bolting them versus using the same hardware GSA mounts with (it’s the OCD in me again), if this is a bust I will through bolt the GSA tabs as well which is how they should have been mounted originally IMO. Testing will be next week unfortunately (WIND!). Been a long day and I’ll stop rambling. Here’s the build pics I have so far. I used 3/4” Dophin Grey HDPE, And a crap load of stainless hardware. Will mount to transom in AM.

Since its a trial are you putting anything to protect the transom from the carriage bolts that bolt the hinges on? Seems to me that they will rub the transom gel. Great idea and cant wait to see the results! I'm biting the slapped bullet as well

Look closer - he’s relieved the hinge area to prevent transom contact.

Well she’s water test ready! I had to gusset the top to keep it from flexing since the mounting points are all towards the bottom of the plate. So I just built a gusset from the swim deck mount. With the pin position it’s in now at full extension it’s 21 degrees of the side of the hull. When stowed it’s only 3 degrees inside of the hull angle (if that makes sense). This concerns me slightly but I’m not sure if it should. Through hull bolting was a major PITA!!! If this thing works, I’m not looking forward to removing the plate and doing it right haha!

My intention was to rough this up quick, do a water test and then go from there. But, then that pesky OCD comes in, and out comes the router table lol. it’s way more a curse than a blessing. Ask my wife!

agreed, you will want to do some platform mods to get that tucking in as far as possible for a final design.  i think you will also want the gate itself to be taller--flush with the platform height would be enough.  perhaps you can just raise the platform 2-3" and the gate will tuck right under?

Looks great! The 3 degree in, if this were permanent, would effect the water coming off the back of the boat so make sure the final tucks under tight. That would be where you want the 4.25” stroke ram. Plus you mounted it on the wrong side of the boat......

Looks really nice. I agree with others though that you will want it to tuck as far as you can under the platform. I think with the way it sets now you will wind up with a scar across your wave and potentially some spray.

To be fair, if i leave GSA on ones side, and leave my slapper how it is, the scar on the wave is the goofy guys prob not mine! hahaha jk
