Guppydriver 154
Man.... It is me. I LOVE being out on the water, but it's a pretty big investment (I have a loan on mine). With DC ramp closed and the drought going on everywhere, I am actually thinking of moving on. I have two concerns. 1. Inability to boat locally 2. Rapid decrease in boat value when everyone unloads them due to the first reason. Am I just spouting the white mans lies or is this a concern that others are having at the moment ? My kids would be so bummed, but that's a lot of coin to spend monthly for only one or two trips a summer. I need to use the boat regularly (locally) to justify the investment. I welcome your thoughts....
bloodiestcadaver 382
I am not at all worried. we may be in a "drought" but if you noticed, deer creek was full my march last year. My guess is they drained deer creek to help with the great salt lake so we get maximum lake effect as possible. The river was roaring, so they were dumping it pretty fast. We had pretty much all lakes full this year besides jordanelle, which turned out to be just fine as well.
schill38 64
My buddy regularly fishes the Provo River and he said it's flowing twice as fast this year as it was last year and that they are indeed purposely releasing more water out of Deer Creek than normal. I've been to Jordanelle the last 3 Sundays and it's been absolutely perfect. I keep track and have been to the lake 22 times this year with friends or family and for that reason alone I can't sell my boat but the same thoughts you have had have crept into my mind. It for sure is hard to justify paying for something 8 months a year that you can't use but I just figure my yearly boat payments are the same price as 1 trip to Disneyland (which I avoid at all costs lol) so for me I'm keeping my boat and praying for snow every day this winter!! BTown801 26
You bought a boat based on deer creek??? I avoid that place at all costs. Also the ramp has only been closed for the last 2 weeks. The local boating season is winding down, not sure why you're worried about it. Sorry I just have a really bad opinion of deer creek. I would rather pull 6 hours to Powell than the 15 minutes it takes me to get to deer creek.

I guess I just worry and am perhaps looking for some reasons to be talked off the ledge. I'm not super wealthy and pay for indoor storage as well, so I need to get a lot out of the boat to justify it. My family is just all over the place age wise and we get really busy with sports/work/school so long trips are few and far between. Sometimes, we honestly only have time for a quickie up to DC for an hour or two before needing to come back. The other thing is the DC closure pushes more boats to the remaining reservoirs resulting in longer launch lines. Also, I didn't just mean DC although I mentioned it specifically. I was referring to the water levels all over in the intermountain west, Powell, Mead, Deer Creek, Sand Hollow, Jordanelle etc... I just can't help but think if we have a few more dry winters, it could affect all of us.
Hyperryd 3,305
I’ve been boating for almost 30 years. The weather is a cycle. Wet then dry… Some years you get to play every weekend other summers, you barely get to touch the boat. It’s a tough sport in the bad years. It definitely is harder on the bad years when you have a payment. I’m personally surprised that with high gas prices, low water levels and rising interest rates, that there still is a demand. Any one of those can derail resale in a typical year. We all know the last few years haven’t been typical! The only person that can decide if it’s worth the investment is you. schill38 64
I used to love Deer Creek because it's only 35 minutes from my driveway to the ramp but this year it was a disaster!! Evening nights and Sundays used to be great but it was so crowded this year and lots of boats pulling tubes all the time which my guess is from no one wanting to go to Utah Lake anymore. The last 3 Sundays we have been to Jordanelle and it's worth the extra 20 minutes, might be my go to lake next year until everyone else decides that as well lol

It gets so busy, but it runs very smooth

BigRyUt 6
I don’t think I saw anyone mention that there is a major renovation project on the dam at Deer Creek. The drop in water level is to facilitate that work. They are not completely draining it but had to reduce the level. They have been holding more in Jordanelle and releasing more out of deer creek. That just answers this Lake question. Still need rain and snow for the problem in the western US. I have teenage boys and without the boat would rarely see them. The time spent boating is priceless to me. 180 hours on the boat so far this season and heading to Geezy this weekend to finish it off! https://www.fox13now.com/news/local-news/deer-creek-reservoir-to-undergo-60-million-in-infrastructure-upgrades?_amp=true Guppydriver, BTown801, schill38 and 1 other
