PROPS......2018 MB B52 23' 440

Wanting to know what prop everyone is running on there 2018 B52 23'?  I am at 5000' and have the 440. Plug and play 1100 bags and surf pipe, which I hear effects rpms slightly.

 

I have the 2775 prop.  I have determined I need way more pitch.  I am thinking 2247 is what I need, but I am thinking I need even more than that? Anyone running more pitch than a 2247?  Anyone running a 2277, what motor?

I don't have a B52 23, so this may be less helpful. On my 16 F22 with 400 (so, a lighter boat with a bit less power) I ran a 2277 up at Lake Tahoe at 6200 feet.  2277 was great for wakeboarding and cruising (could hit WOT and 40 mph with 12 people in the boat). However, loaded for surfing (my prefered surfing setup amounts to about 4500 lbs, with about 600 of that in the bow) it struggled to reach and hold 11.6.    No way it would have planed out with all that ballast...but I don't run that way anyway.  Conversely, with a 2249 on, it would pull full ballast to surf speed without much issue.  Ultimately, I ended up going for a 2279, which is same diameter and pitch as 2277 but with less cup.  I haven't tried it on Tahoe but so far at lower elevations up to about 4,000 it has been great.  My point is that a 2277 might be the upper limit on your larger boat at your elevation but a 2247 should be workable and will get you several more mph at any given RPM than will the 2775.

I have heard .75" as a rule of thumb for minimum clearance on wake boats.  However, I'd ask that question of the people at ACME for your specific application.  In my case, I was considering a 15.5" for my F22 but it would have resulted in about 5/8" clearance so I was just a little worried and didn't go there.

Acme 2951 (15x10.5) is my choice of weapon at a mile high.  However, I am not sure what your tranny ratio is.  I believe another member here has a 17 with the new tranny ratio & he runs the 2937 (15x11)

2247 will be my choice, i have the 2775 with the 440 b52 23 at 5900 ft. I just need to get some mula first  ;)

I havent experienced it but from all the prop talk I think the 2247 is going to be nice for us high elevation guys

Okay so I just sold my 2775 and bought a 2247.  I will report back how it does but I am guessing 2247 will be much closer, but I am thinking may need slightly more pitch than the 2247.  I see your in Utah.  I may take my 2247, once I test it, and have the Prop doc in orem help add some more pitch to the 2247 if its still not enough.

Thats cool i had no idea you could modify the prop. Yea let me know how it goes! i was going to post up my current readings yesterday but i launced for about 30 min at jordanelle but it was too choppy and rainy so i just loaded up and went home, sadly.

Any trans ratio I'm just concerned about clearance. I have one inch clearence now. As noted elsewhere I have read 3/4" is the min. Seems we should all be running 15.5" props if they fit and no one seems to using them. I don't want to be the first.

I'm considering it.  Boat doesn't come out of storage for another couple of weeks - need to take some measurements.  Acme advised 3/4" minimum clearance to avoid gelcoat burn.  Anybody else running a 15.5" ???

Talked to acme they say no problem running 15.5" props on our boats and they they say it will improve efficiency and fuel economy. I now have a 2849 on order. I'll let you know how it compares to the 2247. I'm happy with the 2247, but I want a backup prop and figured I could go a little bigger with my everyday prop for lake Wa.

 

Edit - i should mention he said it's possible you could see some gel coat burning running 3/4" clearance with the 550 but no concern with the 400/440

15.5" pitch which is only 1.25" more pitch than the 2247 prop I'm running now and it has less cup. The acme tech calculated that my rpms would go down by 200. He was actually thinking I might want to go the other way and add a little more cup to the 2849. Shit hope I'm not wasting a pile of money on bad info from acme.

I don't have a lot of experience with changing diameter but he was saying larger diameter is #1 then go to pitch and cup last. Which i suppose makes your point. Hopefully his calcs are correct. He was really selling the larger diameter as a big upgrade for our heavily weighted boats at slowish speeds. For Max top speeds apparently you want to minimize diameter

I bet it is going to work great.  I'm running a 2279, which is a 15 X 15.75 and only have the 400.  With a 440, I am thinking the prop you're getting should give you a good balance of pulling power and reduced rpm when surfing, wakeboarding or cruising.  Obviously it won't have as much pure pull as a lower pitched prop, but it also won't require running at 4K+ rpm most of the time, either.

Okay 2247 is tons better. No more cavitation. I had 4 in the boat and full of ballast (4700) and able to plane no problem. Cav plate 3/4 down, no cavitation. Surf rpms are around 3800 from 4200-4300. Still has plenty of pull and still is snappy. Anyone high altitude with the 440 in a 2018 I recommend 2247.

Gelcoat burn is caused by friction, correct? Assume distance between the blade tip and the hull, RPM and cavitation all play into the equation. Wonder why ACME says it would be more likely on the 575 vs the 400/440?

I suppose it's that the higher power motor can just push more water at a higher rate, so more friction.

Talked to a different tech at acme and was told the same info. He says a 15.5' prop will give better hole shot and better fuel economy at surf speeds then a 15" prop and in the case of the 2849 the rpms will be down 150-200 over the 2247.

 

Watch the new 2019 F25 run a 17" prop.
