Recommended ballast weight in boat

Hey guys,

 

I have an appointment at active in Oregon city on Tuesday to get some plug and play ballasts installed in my 2013 F21. From what I’ve read on the forums, and from just general use in my boat, bow weight is a must (even for stock ballast). Originally i was thinking 1000lb bags in the rear lockers, but after doing some reading, that seems like it may be overboard. I don’t have trim tabs on my boat, and after talking with some buddies, even 750lb bags, on top of the 900lb stock hard tanks may require tabs to get on plane. For the bow, what bags are people using up there? How much weight can you get in them, and is it adequate enough for the added weight in the rear? Were/are trim tabs necessary? With the added weight in the front, was your boat prone to porposing? I’ve had a few people up there, maybe 500lbs or so, and it makes the wake with the stock tanks great. I’m just unsure of a 500lb bag, with an additional 2-3 people up there. I understand that it WILL porpose under certain circumstances. I had a 2006 Ski centurion direct drive and the nose under NO weight sat so low to the water that any little wave would flood the bow. It would scare the sh!t out of my every time a huge roller would come near my boat. I love that my MB sits so high in the water, that’s one of the many reasons i chose it, but i don’t want to go back to constantly stressing about taking massive water over the bow with any small roller.

 

I’m looking to get a clean, massive, consistent wake around 21.5. I’m not a fan of riding fast, as it’s more painful eating it on a failed tantrum or big 3. Also not a fan of the port side wake at slower speeds with it being constantly washed out.

 

I’m re propping to the 2079 to help with the plaining/added weight.

 

Any added setups, advice, conjecture is much appreciated. Just trying to make the right decision, as the install is pretty spending. Thanks in advance!

Are you happy with the wake with just the stock tanks and the 500 lbs of human ballast or are you trying to go bigger than that?  If that is enough you could just add a 500lb bow bag and be done.  These are a popular choice so you don't lose your bow seating area.

If you're trying to go bigger then I think you're definitely going to need that 2079 prop to get moving.  I don't have the 2079 prop so I can't say how much weight beyond stock it can handle, but I would think two 500lb bags in the rear would be about max once you factor in some passenger weight.

 

As far as the port side at slower speed, just bias bleed off a little of the starboard ballast while underway and that should clean it up.

I’m trying to go bigger than the stock wake. My buddy runs a wakeboarding school here in Oregon, and going from his boat to mine is really a kick in the shorts. His wake is MASSIVE, and you get insane pop, which makes learning tricks easier. I think he has about 4200lbs overall.

 

Often times it’s just myself and a couple buddies wakeboarding, which is why I’m wanting the 750’s for maximum weight, even if slim body weight. Obviously when i have 12 people in the boat, i won’t need to fill the bags all the way.

 

Active was hesitant to recommend the 2079, and said the 1617 or 1235 would be a better fit for wakeboard speeds and overall cruising above 30mph. Doing more research in the forums to get a good consensus on what people run.

Go big or go home!  :D

 

Quite a few surfers use the 2079 because they are running similar weight.  You should post in the Wakesurf section and ask people what they think about their Wakeboard speed and top end.  Unfortunately the Wakeboard section of the forum just isn't very active so you probably won't get as many replies here.  Be sure and post your results.  Sounds like you'll end up with a huge wake!

I have a 2013 B52 so things are slightly different. But i wakeboard 90% of the time vs surfing. When i need to bump the wake up i usually put an 850 right in the middle of the boat. What i have found is the more weight you add to the boat the faster you have to go to clean it up. There is such thing as too much weight, the wake may want to roll over at  you  @21.5.  I ride @ 70' and 22.8 MPH. great clean wake tons of pop. If i were you i would experiment with bags and fill them with a pump over the side dial in what you want and then plumb it in. Probably 500's in the rear, or 750's not full (fill them all the way for surfing). and a bow bag up full up front. Or save the coin get a big ole 850 or 1100 and drop it in the middle of the boat and roll with it.

Thanks for the reply big blue. Got back from shasta yesterday. My setup i was trying was:

 

Stock 900lb tanks full

850’s in both rear lockers (maybe 500’ish lbs full)

Sumo sac 500lb in nose under seats (maybe 400lb full)

300lb lead in nose

3 people in nose (maybe 400lbs)

Acme 2419 prop (15X12X.075)

 

Overall, i had well over 1000lbs in the nose. With the stock tanks and bags, probably around 1400-1500lbs in each rear locker. I could not get the boat to plane. It would top out at about 13mph. I’m thinking I’m going to need trim tabs :/ I was pointed in the direction of the wakemakers kit, but at $4k, I’m not really wanting to dump that much more money into the boat if it’s not going to produce. The bag and prop install was over $3k. I’m pretty disappponted with the end result. I may try to put even more weight in the nose, and see how that fairs.

 

I didn’t get any photos of the wake, but I’m going to hit the lake with my buddy this week/weekend and see if we can dial something decent in and snap some photos.

Anything cheaper to install than the wake makers kit? They’re talking the full surf gate kit. I was thinking just a hydraulic gate mid ship to get on plane for wakeboarding. Don’t need surf gate. The suction cup works great for that.

The GSA at wakemakers is for surfing. It won't help you get on plane for wakeboarding at all.

Yeah, idk wtf the dude was talking about. I tried telling him i just wanted a trim tab, but he was pushing the full surf gate. Not really impressed with AWS honestly. Their work was sloppy on the ballast bag install. Loose hoses under seats and gobs of silicone on the vent lines. Easy to spot what is factory and what is aftermarket.

Check out robeport's link for the DIY info.  That's the least expensive option if you're willing to do the work yourself.  I'm not familiar with the 2419 prop.  How does it compare to the 2079?

I tried the links, but the parts aren’t available anymore. I think I’m going to piece together my own kit. There’s a guy on here that sells the plates. I’ll still need the hydraulic arm, and switch though. Anybody have any links to updated parts that would work?

 

The 2419 is a more aggressive prop than a 2079. Still a 15X12, but the cup is a little more aggressive. The boat is weighted as sh!t, but it should still be able to pull that much weight.

Thought i would share my setup so to give you and idea of what i have done to get a steller wake out of my Tomcat.

Then i did something I haven't seen anyone else do. The factory Battery Tray built into the Floor i used a vibrating cutter to remove because underneath is a area large enough to hold a 650# sac between where the tray and Gas tank reside. this accomplished 2 things: 1st gave me substantial forward center weight. 2nd Allowed me to move 100#'s of Battery weight to the Port side passenger compartment to counter Prop Torque. The only other weight I run is 300#'s in Lead Wake Bags in the bow, all the plug and play ballast is filled with Johnson F4B-11 pumps.

At this point I am sure you are thinking....How in the Hell do i plane off the boat with 4700#'s (this # accounts for 405# in Fuel)? well i added custom built tabs along with adding additional travel to the Factory tab (see pics) I have the MCX 350 engine and a Acme 2315 prop and can run run a Crew of 5 ppl @ sea level without dumping weight outside of whats needed to clean up any wash present. the wake is stupid.... pic of the 5'11" guy is before i added the 650 in the front 75' rope and about 23.8 to 24.5 mph

Thanks for the reply Lucas. Do you run that 650lb bag in addition to something under your front seats, or just the bag and the lead? So about ~1000lbs in your bow, and ~1600 in each rear locker? Sounds legit. I’m just hesitant to cut a big hole in my boat where the batteries go lol but that does sound like a solid place for a bag.

 

Right now, i can get about 400lbs in the nose with the bag under the seats. I put another 300-500lbs of lead up there.

 

I was attempting to run similar weight as you in shasta last week, but couldn’t get on plane. I’m definitely going to need a trim tab. Got a quote from my local dealer for $1400 for the trim tab. I’m a big DIY guy when it comes to my house and rentals. I can remodel a house like a MF, but for some reason drilling holes in my boat just makes me uneasy.

 

I hate how fast i have to ride to get a clean wake with my MB. I caught an edge at 20mph on my buddies moomba the other day and racked my noggin pretty good.
