Sbentz101
So I pulled boat yesterday...hurt bad but it's not long for snow. Anyway, last year I did the recommended semi synthetic oil but curious if it's ok to run full synthetic or at least mix the two this time so next time I can make the full switch? Sbentz101
I should say that based on some comments from a post about this couple years ago, I am at 118 hours now so break in period should be over. I went ahead and split it, 4 quarts fully synthetic and 3 quarts semi synthetic. Hopefully it will work out for next season.
M1AHD
Sounds like it already done.. No need to blend oil though, actually I'd recommend against it. Semi vs synthetic isn't a big deal. Most important thing is to just change it regularly. jtryon and Birddog7.62
mxvet
If you really want to run full syn, I would email indmar and see what they think but they have this in manual: 360, 400 and 440 Models – Semi-synthetic 5W-30 oil meeting the API rating of SN 460 and SC575 Models – Fully synthetic 15W-50 oil meeting the API rating of SN
bloodiestcadaver
Why would you want to run full synthetic, If it only requires semi? Birddog7.62
Tbag
I have never read or heard a "good argument" to use semi or conventional oil over syn. I could see how semi could be "good enough" in some engines and no real benefit to full synthetic, but the idea of synthetic being worse than semi seems silly. Synthetic outperforms conventional oil in every test I have ever seen. Sbentz101
Sbentz101
I want to run the best and just want to do it cautiously...not too soon or void warranty. But like TBag said, full synthetic is best and that's where I'd like to end up if it's not going to hurt anything. I just wonder why semi synthetic is the recommended oil and if it has to do with seating the rings properly as some have talked about. Now that I have enough hours on the boat, I'd like to switch. jtryon
yeah i wouldn't mix oils...just choose one way or the other and stick with the same brand for the life of the boat.
Tbag
Yeah the ring seating argument is that your engine will take longer to break in. Maybe with full syn you need 30 or 40 hours for break in. - I have run mobile 1 synthetic since the 50 hr mark. If something goes wrong it won't be from low quality oil. mxvet
Can't say I've ever heard of a boat motor failure because of oil viscosity.
bloodiestcadaver
In the end as long as your using the correct viscosity, your probably fine. these boats get there oil changed before it even turns black. The wrong weight has been known to cause excessive upper end wear like flat cams and such
Couvmerk
A full synthetic will have certifications that a semi wont ever be able to get. I run Castrol edge titanium and you can look up https://www.bobistheoilguy.com/ if you ever want go deep down the oil rabbit hole. If you are really worried about it, send your oil in for testing and that will tell you more than any recommended schedule.
