So how come no Indmar 460?

I know there has been curiosity on some of the past threads, but I don't recall a real definitive answer. It seems like the 460 in the Alphas would be a great goldilocks engine...right in the sweet spot of price versus performance. I know a few of you like @the donfather @Mxvet @oboyskibum have (or will have) the 575, but for many it's a little cost prohibitive at like $18.75K retail (I know no one pays this).

Meanwhile the 440 for many just doesn't offer enough performance increase value for the money spent at $7.75K retail. I've read you don't see much power increase until you're in the upper RPM bands compared to the 400.

Is it just me or does it seem like the 460 would be a popular (and profitable) option for MB to offer that sits right in the middle? What I find very interesting is Moomba offers the 460 Raptor (they call it the 450) for $7.690K retail, or $600 bucks cheaper than MB offers it's 440.

Just wondering if anyone else has wondered why it's not even an option? Is it mounting or fit? CARB issues? Just curious if anyone has heard. Not that it is important or anything, I'm just looking for anything to pass the days as my boat should be here soon (hopefully).

PS....

I'm getting so damn excited for this boat, I'm having a hard time winding down in the night. It's constant youtubing of stuff like Chantel Herberts docking tips...every MB Insta site....marine store websites...you name it. My wife told me she is going to force me to take some of her Ambien the next few nights....so I just wanted to apologize in advance if seemingly out of nowhere, I post my opinions on catheter porn, homemade lube recipes, or something similar. That stuff messes me up!

It used to be an option but has been removed a couple years ago from what I remember. But I couldn't tell you why

Interesting... You have the 440 amiright?

I didn't know the 460 was even an option. Even at "cost" (which I assume is around 12k or so), the 575 is a little too steep for my blood. Especially if you turn boats every few years. If I knew it was a "forever boat", then maybe. Besides warranty, one of the biggest issues I had ordering my boat was worrying if the 400 would be enough for Utah boating, so I bet I would have strongly considered the 460.

I read a lot of engine threads on the Moomba forums since I almost bought one and the consensus was that the 400 just wasn't enough bang for your buck since the gains are mostly realized at higher RPM's and it is essentially just an ECM tune. After six months or so of learning more about it, I might be tempted to go with 440 if there ever is a next boat.

IF the 400 wasn't good enough, they wouldn't use it IMO. I had the 440 in my 2017 but my 2020 which was supposed to come with the 440 ended up shipping with the 400. The 440 to me was noticeable. Not really by the seat of your pants, but when pulling it seems to have just enough to get over the threshold. while the 400 just takes a little longer. Yes the 440 doesn't add power until 3800 rpms I believe, but when you hold shot your boat it will take it up to 4000 if its propped right so thats actually where you will feel the difference. But you won't get any top speed or much feel in difference just cruising around.

with my new one I noticed it mostly when I had a full 10 people crew and I would tube some kids around. I actually had to use the center plate to get up to speed. But I have scared all my kids on the tube so they don't do it much anyway.

I will let you know how the 575 works out. If we meet up at Pineview you can check it out.

That would be awesome! Of course, I already know how the 575 will work out on the water...I just couldn't get it to work out of my wallet. 😁

If the 460 was an option at some point, it wasn't for long.  I'm happy with our 400 but if the 440 start to make gains at 3800 and up, that could actually make a difference while surfing.  While the stars and setup sometime align to allow us to surf at 3500-3750, we generally run 3800 - 4100 surfing with our 400.

@bloodiestcadaver

Wish I could scare my kids away from the tube...you'll have to teach me how ..lol

I have a friend who set the rule that nobody gets to tube until they've either wakeboarded or surfed.  Once they've done that, they can tube all they want.  Didn't take long until they just wanted to wakeboard.  Might try that at some point...

460 wasn't adopted soon enough by consumers so MB nixed it. Said it required larger exhaust and different surf pipe diameter etc.

I also feel the 460 would have been great. Its the go to motor in tige and supra at 5000'..

Hey MB, can you give us the 460, 17" prop, 2:1 tranny, and sharper bottom v nose please? Now we talkin

Totally agree!! I would have been willing to pay for the upgrade to the 460, the 440 just didn't seem worth it...
